Everybody knows the "Beano" album, which gave rise to Clapton being equated with a guitar wielding rock God. The band on this album includes Mayall on piano, Hammond organ, harmonica, and most vocals; bassist John McVie; drummer Hughie Flint; and Clapton. Clapton's guitar sounds were revolutionary at the time because how it was recorded was never done before. Studio techs never turned up a mic to "11" before, especially for a blasting guitar. The guitar that Eric Clapton used during these sessions was a sunburst 1959 or1960 Gibson Les Paul Standard with two PAF humbucking pickups. Unfortunately the guitar was stolen shortly after the recordings, never to be seen again, but reportedly is in a private collection somewhere on the east coast USA. Clapton had the amp he used modified as well so the sound he generated on this album was very unique due to the guitar involved the jacked up amp, and recording specifics, making it impossible to reconstruct. Recording was much more experimental in the mid to late sixties.....some worked, some didn't. This one not only worked, it revolutionized the rock/blues guitar sound. Mayall, to me, was a bluesman, maybe not the best voice, maybe not the best player ever (although I think his musicianship is excellent)......but most bluesmen were not.....their unique styles, abilities and emotion is what makes them and for me Mayall puts his heart and soul into his music and thats what great bluesmen do. The partnership between Mayall and Clapton didn't last long but they brought out the best in each other and I would say this album is in the top 5 best electric blues albums ever.

I have always loved that much of the British Invasion of the 60's was led by bands that followed, learned and loved American blues. John Mayall was a great ambassador, and when he's backed up by Eric Clapton, we have a collection of music that must be treasured.

This is an amazing album that should be in every blues or classic rock lover's collection. This is also an excellent pressing with the added bonus of an mp3 download card included for both stereo and mono versions.
