Amazon.ca Product Description

Lens hoods extend and shade the end of lens preventing unwanted light straying into the lens. Since the end of the lens is extended, you get the benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact. Each dedicated lens hood was specifically created to match the specific focal length of the lens it was designed for. Photographers can easily attach the lens hood on the dedicated bayonet mount, and after usage mount the lens hood on the lens in reverse for a compact storage solution.

Great news, the 46 mm snap on lens cap will fit on the inside of the lens hood.

Looks great but don't know why my coating is coming off already. It's all spotty and peely.

I bought Lumix 20 mm F1.7 lens to use on my Olympus E-P1 camera for an overseas trip this summer. I am a fan of lens hoods as they both shade the lens from the sun (for some lens it is less of an issue) and offer protection for the front element of the lens. Lumix lens does not come with a hood so I needed a 3rd party alternative. I searched Amazon and came up with this item and decided to take a chance on it. It appears to be well made out of metal. It is a screw-on hood, not a snap-on, but I am a bit partial to screw-on hoods having used them on some of my Pentax lens in the past. It is not very big but does make your camera a little bit less streamlined. At the same time it gives the camera a cool look especially on a stainless steel shiny E-P1. Looks aside, it proved itself admirably in field conditions saving my lens numerous times. Tourists could be quite pushy and I lost count of the number of times someone would bump into me and my camera. I hate to think what could have happened to the lens if it were not for these few millimeters of metal between it and the world. I highly recommend this hood. It is well-made and very useful. The only two drawbacks that I could cite (and those are more of a trade-off from my point of view) are 1) I had to unscrew the hood every time I wanted to put a lens cap on as this hood does not allow you to attach lens cap while it is on and 2) I had to unscrew it when putting away camera into its case as I had a very tight-fitting case to minimize space it took in my luggage. If you would use a bigger case, you could easily store your camera there with the hood on.My only negative comment is about Fotodiox itself (not the hood) as I paid for an expedited shipping to ensure I got the hood a few days before I had to leave. The hood came on the last day before departure, later than the delivery date that was promised. So, if you, like me, want to order it for a trip, give it enough time to get it before you leave and not after :-).

I bought the 37mm to fit on the Olympus 17/2.8 pancake lens. This lens hood is available in a lot of different sizes and I would expect all of them to perform the same. I may buy some others to fit lenses I have with hoods I'm not so fond of using. The job of a lens hood is simple--keep out stray light. It also adds a little protection to the front lens element as well--keeping out stray objects. Making the lens hood round and screw-in simplifies attachment. While a dedicated rectangular hood might be a better choice for flare control, a round hood is adequate. Most of the hoods I have currently are round and they all work fine. This particular hood has cut-outs for use with rangefinder cameras--so you can see the subject through the hood instead of the hood blocking a portion of your view. It mimics a hood designed by Leica from years past. That hood was a clip-on design that fit both the 35mm Summicron and the 50mm Summicron lenses for the Leica M-series cameras. I have one of those hoods on each of those excellent old Leitz lenses--but those hoods are not cheap and they are not readily available. This Fotodiox hood is cheap, available and a good substitute. It is all metal, matte finished and threaded properly. If you can utilize it on your lenses, it's a good option. You don't have to just use it on a rangefinder camera either.Edit: After using this hood with the Olympus lens, I've also bought the hood in 39mm and 40.5mm to fit some of my other lenses. All these lens hoods fit well and appear to be of very high quality. If you need a lens hood in any of the sizes made by Fotodiox, these are recommended.
