What is Biochar? Biochar is a type of charcoal made from plant materials such as hardwoods, grasses, and agricultural and forest residues that are decomposed at high temperatures, often during renewable energy production. During the process, the physical and chemical properties of the plant material change into a porous, stable, carbon-rich by-product known as biochar. Why use it? Biochar has been used in agriculture for many centuries. Adding biochar to soil has the potential of increasing soil carbon, soil nutrient content, increased water retention and water-soluble nutrients, and increased beneficial microbial life. DIRECTIONS Best results are achieved when adding this mix to your soil at least 5-7 days BEFORE planting. However, this can be used at any time in the planting process. Optimal ratio for most gardeners is 5-10% biochar in the top 6 inches of their soil. (1 part Bio Char to 9 parts planting soil). Indoor Plants(container plants, seeds, cuttings, transplants): Use a small rake or spoon and hand-mix this product around the plant within your desired container. Best results are adding close to the root zone. You can also just layer a light dusting on the top and water in as usual. Outdoor Plants (Gardens, Bedding Plants, Ornamentals): Use your conventional tiller and rake and till directly into the soil. Adding more over time can increase product performance. Trees and Shrubs: Best when applied to the root zone area. Rake into this area and water as desired. Compost Mix: Mix as needed within your compost process - use as desired as you would your final compost. This product is not intended to be used as a soil substitute.

The bag was smaller than I thought, but a little goes a long way. The charcoal is quite fine, so if you’re looking for big chunky charcoal, this isn’t for you. I use it as a bioactive layer in my smaller terrariums to help cleanse the water and help trap harmful elements.

If you’re serious about healthy plants, better drainage, and preventing root rot, Harris Horticultural Charcoal is an absolute game-changer. I’ve tried several brands, but this one stands out for its high-quality, fine yet effective texture and multiple uses in both gardening and home applications.🌿 Improves Soil & Prevents Root RotAs a plant lover, I use this horticultural charcoal in my indoor and outdoor pots to help with moisture control. It absorbs excess water while still allowing soil to retain the right amount of hydration—a lifesaver for plants prone to overwatering! Since using it in my orchid and succulent mix, I’ve noticed healthier roots and less risk of fungal growth.💨 Odor Absorption & Air PurificationBeyond gardening, I’ve also used this charcoal as a natural deodorizer in my home. It works amazingly well at absorbing moisture and odors in areas like the bathroom, fridge, and even my compost bin. If you’re looking for a chemical-free way to neutralize smells, this is a fantastic solution.✅ Premium Quality & Great ValueThe fine, uniform pieces make it easy to mix into potting soil, and it’s not overly dusty like some lower-quality alternatives. A little goes a long way, so this bag offers excellent value for the price.🌎 Eco-Friendly & All-NaturalI appreciate that this is 100% natural charcoal, free of additives or fillers. It’s a sustainable choice for both gardening and household use, and it doesn’t have that artificial or chemical-laden smell that some other charcoals do.Final Verdict:Whether you’re a plant parent, terrarium enthusiast, or just looking for a natural deodorizer, Harris Horticultural Charcoal is a must-have. The quality is top-tier, the benefits are undeniable, and the versatility makes it a staple in my home. I highly recommend it—this is one of those products you don’t realize you need until you try it!💡 Pro Tip: Rinse before use to remove excess dust, and mix it with potting soil for optimal results.

Small bags so had to buy several but helps to cover the spread of the juglone from the black walnut in the soil so other plants can grow.

Great texture and lots of surface area for little microbes to make a home, hold extra nutrients, and to fluff up soil structure. Remember that the first year you add biochar, it actually *takes away* nutrients, as it gets "loaded up" in all of the tiny pores. That's okay; the payoff comes in the following seasons to come. Great product; will buy again.

I used this for my all my Vivarium and Bioactive reptile enclosures. This is by far the best I could find anywhere for Horticultural grade charcoal. Bought multiple times and will again.

This bag is smaller than I expected, so make sure you’re looking at the amount you’re getting when you order. It’s my bad of course, and the charcoal is good. It’s pretty fine. Next time I might opt for larger chunks, but again that’s not hidden when you look at what they’re offering. Overall it’s a good product, and despite my gripes, I’ve used it all up, and my plants seem happy.
