Hard plastic, cheap garbage.If you are looking for soft rubber type look for metro molded parts. Would not buy again. Ordered another from a different manufacturer and threw this one in the garbage.

I am restoring a 68 mustang. The previous owner had installed new carpet and just slit the place for the dimmer switch, leaving it looking unfinish and cheap. This is a sturdy, well made piece that cleaned up the installation! Don't hesitate if you are lookin into it...it is a good one!

I thought it would be rubbery, but its plastic- no complaints. It does have a collar that you can slip behind the carpet to "lock" it in place.
