There wasn't any ball, it was just water. The ball melted and the temp was only 78 degrees inside.

I have an aquatic turtle tank that requires the periodic introduction of waste-eating bacteria. Normally, I would measure the liquid to add to the tank. With this product, it is convenient to just pop one of the cartridges into the tank's filter. It works very well in keeping the water clear. The only negative I have is that it was a little difficult to remove the protective seal from each cartridge. This is fine if you have nimble fingers.
