I got this feeder for birds, I have a spot on my balcony where I can strap this to the bars. It is easy to fill and easy enough to periodically clean up the shells and husks leftover from feeding. I think the animals would feel safe since they can stand right inside the feeder. Hopefully, the birds will discover it since I don't really know "how" to attract birds to the location.
