Setting & Adjustment

Setting:

To measure the flatness of a machine or a surface, put the level on a reasonably stable and flat surface. It does not have to be perfectly horizontal as far as it does not move. A square granite surface plate is good but any other flat surface like a machine bed or welding table is also acceptable. Before the operation, make sure the work surface is sturdy and clean. Remove all dirt and dust. Remember to ensure the level gets back to the same position after each rotation.

Adjustment:

  1. Place the level on a reasonably stable and flat surface. If the surface is horizontal, the bubble should be flowing in the middle between two long reference lines. If the surface is not horizontal, the bubble could be at one end of it such as flowing at the right like Fig.1. We can use a wrench to adjust the screw under the red cap. For example, when the bubble is at the right like Fig.1, mark down the measurement of the bubble’s position.
  2. Rotate the level by 180° end-to-end. If the bubble is still at the same position as Fig.2 or at a similar position and the division is less than 1/2, mark the position down. It is roughly the same as the bubble in Fig.1.
  3. Rotate it by 180°. Slightly rotate the adjusting screw with a wrench by a small degree until the bubble reaches the middle between two long reference lines. If the level is like Fig.3 and the difference between the two measurements is the same or roughly the same, the level is horizontal and ready to use.
  4. If the level still seems incorrect, repeat step (1).

CanCNC Tooling Solutions 6", 8", 12" Professional Master Precision Level Accuracy 0.0002''/10''

A

Adjust the level by turning the adjustment screw under the red cap using a wrench.

6", 8", 12" Professional Master Precision Level Accuracy 0.0002''/10''

B

Put the level on a reasonably flat surface such as a square granite surface plate. Any other flat surface like a machine bed or a welding table are also acceptable as far as they do not move. Mark down the reading of bubble’s location between these deviations.

* The surface is not included.

1103 EBC S908-C606, C608, C612 Module 3 c.

C

Rotate the level by 180° end-to-end. And mark down the reading of bubble’s location between these deviations.

1103 EBC S908-C606, C608, C612 Module 3

D

You can adjust the center vial by turning the screw with a wrench. Slightly turn the screw and the bubble will move gradually. Watch the screw’s turning direction and the bubble movement carefully.

Calibrating

E. To determine whether calibration is correct, see if the bubble flows in the same position in both two measurements with the same number of deviations after the level is rotated by 180° every time, and the average measurements of these two are true horizontal levels. And if the bubble flows between the same number of deviations when the level is rotated by 180° every time, it does not have to be at the center.

If the bubble flows in different positions in two measurements, the level is not calibrated successfully. Repeat the above steps until the level is calibrated.

6", 8", 12" Professional Master Precision Level Accuracy 0.0002''/10''

Measuring increment

  • Mark down datum of the two measurements, create graphs and see if these two curves are symmetrical.
  • Then calculate the increment.
  • To measure the increment, slide the level along the surface.
  • Mark down the deviations.
6", 8", 12" Professional Master Precision Level Accuracy 0.0002''/10''

Warning

Keep Clean

  • Make sure the level, surface plate and work area are clean.

Avoid shocks

  • Avoid shocks by handling with care. Keep it at a constant room temperature and insulate it with heat and airflow.

Wait

  • Wait for a stationary bubble before reading the level.

Vertical observation

  • Read the bubble with a vertical observation to avoid producing parallax.

Anti-rust

  • Process anti-rust procedures after measuring. Pay attention to shockproof and moisture when placing it.

This level is exactly what my husband was looking for (he's a machinist). Accurate and well made. The box it came in... not so much. The wooden box it comes in is too flimsy for the weight of the level. It was broken when we took it out of the cardboard box. Would have given a 5/5 rating but we need the wooden box for storage. We will have to fix or find another alternative.

Once you calibrate, it gets the job done. Cant find any obvious issues with it.

If you’re in a rush this is not the level for you. It needs to be calibrated, and levelling to this level of precision is a slow process. That being said my lathe has never worked this well period. I was also able to take the twist out of the table of my old jointer.

Dont buy if you're a machinist. It's a level that never stays level.CONS: I don't mind having to calibrate the level, but it constantly lost it's precision even if it was moved ever so gently. I believe the adjustment mechanism is not designed to hold tight tolerances. Also, the bottom is not precision ground.PROS: It's the body was a clean cast. It's actually very sensitive which great, but again it can't hold the precision for long.Go with a Starrett level and be done.

I bought this to set up and level my Mill. Box came completely destroyed, but I glued it back together. I didn’t take a star off for that since most stuff from overseas comes in crappy boxes and holders. It’s the China way. The level itself is very sensitive and looks to be very accurate. Bottom is machined nicely and overall the level is very heavy. It’s expensive for what I used it for but I had to have it.

Very accurate! I had a buddy who was a millwright that brought over several starrett machinist’s levels when we were setting up my mill. We went ahead and used his for the set up ...because Starrett...and afterwards he wanted to mess with this one for gits n’ shiggles. It took about 3 minutes before he was saying “Wow, we should have used this!”It’s heavy, fully encapsulated(helps with temperature fluctuations from just touching it) and has nice slow/smooth settling time. The only knock he gave it was the adjustment screw being a Phillips head, so you had to push down on the screw to make adjustments which made it a little difficult. Well worth living with for the price! This is one of those purchases where you are still high-fiving yourself years down the road for making a good decision and saving a bunch of money in the process.

Its a nice looking level. I opened the box to find instructions stating I needed to find a precisely level surface to calibrate it................WHAT DO YOU THINK I BOUGHT THIS THING FOR???????MAYBE PRECALIBRATE IT BEFORE SHIPPING????????????????????

User adjustability is not a good feature. Should be calibrated but isn't. I was not able to get repeated measurements no matter what I did. I returned and bought a Starett level. This one is a waste of time.

I am using the level to set up my home lathe, surface grinder, surface table. The quality is good - the base is ground cast, the calibration screw works well, the wood box is nice. If I was doing this as a profession I might go for a Starrett but only because that is what the clients expect. I don't really see spending three times the money for the same accuracy - it is really up to the proficiency of the user.

It is a generic probably Chinese brand. However, it does the job. It is very sensitive even to a paper sheet and takes a couple of hours to calibrate it. The pros: it works great and does the job, relatively easy to calibrate, nice wood case, it comes with a key for calibration. The cons: it needs to be calibrated every single time you need to use it. So overall I'd say you get a good bang for the buck but if you are planning on using it on a daily basis you may want to consider a Mitutoyo which costs about $500. It's your call.
