Typical Curt high quality. Very nice smooth finish. No rusting with the stainless which is why I chose it.The nut and lock washer are zinc plated steel which I presume are for strength reasons.This ball is only rated for 6,000 pounds so be careful if you tow heavy, frequently.

This particular trailer ball came via Amazon Warehouse with "minor cosmetic damage". Being curious as to how someone could damage a trailer ball (right up there with tearing up an anvil), the order was placed.The trailer ball arrived in perfect condition...at a great price.Oh and it's a great product...installed in under 5 minutes.

.....and this stainless steel ball is a good example of it. I also have a Curt hitch and the coating is as excellent as the manufacturer claims. I'm very impressed with Curt stuff.

Have had this on my Curt ball mount for several years now, and it's still in great shape. Although I don't do much towing, I bought it back when I lived on the coast since I've seen what the salt air/water/sand does to a standard ball in short order. Although not stainless steel, the nut and lock washer still look great.I have no issue with the Zinc coated nut/lockwasher due to the mentioned galling issues, and besides, that's not the part of the ball that needs to be stainless. The fact is that no coating will last on a ball under towing conditions, so if you want it to stay decent looking then the ball needs to be a solid, rust resistant material, which this one is.

I ordered two of the 40053 Stainless Trailer Balls in the same Amazon order. One of them was all stainless, in a matte finish, with stainless nut and lock washer. That one I rate 5 stars. The second one ended up polished, and had a non-stainless washer and nut. I sent it back and the replacement was exactly the same. 1 Star for that inferior product.I am disappointed in Curt Mfg. Obviously they have changed the alloy, the polish, and the washer/nut combination. The collective changes decrease the quality of the item and I see many others share my concerns. Both types of ball were model 40053.*update* I contacted Curt Mfg. about my concerns and they have chosen not to respond. It has been 5 weeks with no response. There are many other companies to deal with out there, and it is unfortunate that a formerly excellent company has cut quality for the bottom line. I see the ball has Made in China on the tag.
