I use this for starter holes when using a hand operated, auger style post hole digger. You would be surprised how much a starter hole shortens the time.

Auger bit arrived with a bent shaft so had a serious shimmy when first tested. Bent shaft to straighten before trying it on any material. Attempting to drill holes in loosely compacted snow auger bit initially clearing out snow for first 8-10" then 'screwed into' the snowbank. Hanging onto the drill to prevent embedding in the snowbank immediately bent the shaft at the chuck. Expected a much harder steel shaft. Unusable as is even in relatively soft materials much less packed soil or ice.
