These are well built and have a strong spring. The bolt retracts to the point that it leaves about 3/8" remaining outside the housing (basically the angled point) so that needs to be taken into account when installing. Not sure I would use these outside in the elements as they seen to maybe be zinc coated but they would be fine inside or outdoors but inside a shed etc.

I am using this for my garage door. After not having power for 5 days during to Hurricane Helene, I was accessing the garage door manually. Neighbors reported possible vagrants and suspicious activities in the area, so I decided to secure the garage door with a wood block.Seeing how easy it was for someone to lift the garage door or break into one by fishing out the line that unlocks the automatic garage opener, I decided to take additional precautions to manual lock the garage door. This product was solid and heavy duty. The bolts were easy to install and serves as a wedge to prevent the garage door from being opened. These bolts did not come with any securing mechanism, so I used 2 inch screws. It was a bit tricky to improvise and fit this on the garage frame, but I was able to make sure these locks do not impede with the mechanisms of the powered garage door. With me going in vacation in a few months, this serves as an additional security to prevent break ins through the garage.

On my 50 acre ranch barn-type swinging doors are everywhere - indoors and outdoors. The relentless winds in our region have no mercy on barn-type door hinges or closure bolts. It seems as though no matter how sturdy, when it comes to metal /steel verses mother nature, mother nature always wins. We are always repairing damaged door frames, hinges and retaining bolts. All of our current barn-type door bolts stay in the lock position by a retaining pressure clip which might be secured after the handle is moved to a position in which has a notched-type bump that falls into a slot - which can work loose after about 2 hours of pounding winds. These super-spring loaded bolts appear to stay put after being locked into place. So far the two doors we have tested them on are staying closed tight. These spring-loaded bolts also work very well for locking in place double doors where you may want one side of the double door to open and close while the second half stays locked into place at the floor and upper door header.Amazon's price is less than $10 for two of them? I had to blink my eyes a couple of times - since you would not be able to walk out of Home Depot for less than $20.
