Doesn’t say where it was made. Have always had Marples but can’t get them anymore. Was quite surprised with this chisel. Didn’t expect much but seems to be not bad steel and holds an edge well

Completely out true. I have trued a lot of chisel since I started woodworking back in the late 70s. I recall when Irwin and Marples tools were ok. They were also made in England back then. I did not expect a great tool when I ordered this. It was not for my shop, but use in the field. I expected that between my Tormek and my diamond stones I would have this chisel in reasonable shape in an hour. Yes, I allotted that much time for it. Unfortunately, it was so out of whack that I had to give up. Being a bit ocd I usually win out with tools in the end, but this was just too much. That is bad! They are, surprise, surprise no longer made England, but in the Peoples Republic of China.

The Irwin Marples website shows the actual, current appearance of their 'woodworking' chisel. Made in China, not in England as Marples tools originally were. You could spend a lot more on eBay for a used Sheffield antique, or simply go back in time, if your end table needs to know it was made with an English chisel, but you'd spend a lot of time restoring it rather than actual woodworking. Anyway... the factory grind only brings it to an economical level, and an hour or two of sharpening it myself took it above the minimum level that I would use for woodworking. Steel quality and sharpening can bring endless debate, so I recommend watching the Paul Sellers video in which he sharpens a comparable, inexpensive chisel in little time without a fuss. Works well and holds an edge nicely so far, to the point of consistently shaving the end grain of cherry and maple. Even pares nicely without a mallet. Handle grip feels like a dense, rubberized plastic and the handle and blade are long, which is a good size for a bench chisel. I would buy additional sizes as needed or a whole set to save a few dollars if they'll all be used.

Amazing chisel for the money. I only bought one just to try it out. Out of the box, all chisels need to be stoned just a little to make sure the back is flat and the edge is sharp and good. This chisel was almost perfect right out of the box. What a great value for the price. Thick and sturdy too. Also tried it with a mallet. Does a good job by Malik or by hand. I will be buying more sizes of these in the near future. Keep up the good work

Replacing a Marples chisel I had worn out. Exact match except for name imprinted on handle. These hold edge really well, and when you do need to re-sharpen, are easy with a fine grit stone.

Are use it to scrape off my 3-D prints from my 3-D printer and it works like a charm. It is super sharp but then again all I use it for is 3-D prints so I cannot elaborate on it keeping an edge for other uses.
