I bought this to swap out my original steering shaft unit but it's an ¾ inch too short on both sides fully extended. It'll clamp onto either side but for the connection on the steering colum there needs to be a notch cut in order for the bolt on the clamp too clear so it can bite. The gear box side needs no modification and can slide on. The item is very nicely put together and has no slop or play in any of the joints.

No secret the factory GM rag joint is awful. I used this steering shaft to replace my old rag joint. **WARNING** MAKE THIS MODIFICATION AT YOUR OWN RISK.Make sure when removing your factory steering shaft, you lock in the steering wheel with a seat belt, wheel lock, etc. So it does not move during disassembly and assembly. To start off with you will need to drill out the two dimples on either side. Once these dimples are removed, you can slide the two halls apart. It may take some persuading if you do not have a vice. I used a hammer to tap it apart.Once you have the two peices apart, drill a hole in the top around 1-1.25" from the non spline u-joint. See the image as a reference. This will help the two halves seperate easier later if needed. On the spline side (the solid shaft) take a grinder, whiz wheel, etc. and remove 0.75-1" of material from the end. Grind the end smooth. Make sure the two halves slide together relatively smooth. Sanding the paint away really helped me.Install the upper half first. Slide over the u-joint and install until it bottoms out. Apply RED Loctite to the bolt and tighten until snug. Add another 1/4" turn because of the lock washer. **A notch was not needed for my install. This may only be for older shaft models**Now insert the bottom portion into the top portion with the bolt head facing up. It should go all the way to get enough clearance for installation. Slide the spline u-joint over the gear box shaft. Apply RED Loctite to the threads of the bolt. Tighten until snug and apply a 1/4" turn because of the crush washer.Take it for a test drive and make sure you got the right spline clocking. It is very easy to be off 1-2 splines leaving the steering wheel crooked. If this happens just undo the bottom bolt and re-adjust.Hope this helps everyone!

It’s a good quality shaft but make sure you are able to collapse and retract it by hand before trying to install this thing. Had to clamp one end with a vice and hammer the inner shaft completely out, then file it down and lubricate in order to make it adjustable. This turned a 1 hour job into a 3 hour pain in the ass trying to figure out how to fix it. 3 stars for good quality just listen to the reviews and be prepared to work on it first before doing the swap

I ordered this by a part number search for a new product as I wasn't able to find one at a local parts yard. It's for an '84 Monte Carlo, but it will be similar to most all GM's of this time period. To my surprise, it came pinned into place. The shaft has a locked length.A lot of recommendations on the web are the heat up and melt plastic. This unit is made differently!! You can spend time cutting the outer shaft off above one of the "pins"l, but this weakens the overall strength of the product. On the product I received, these are not pins. The outer is a punch pressed to lock into place.>>>>Here's the alteration / fix which takes about 20 minutes.1) Pick a drill bit which matches the hole size.2) A drill press works nicely if you have one. > Drill down enough to remove the punched portion of the outer shaft. then a touch more. less than 1/16" into inner shaft. This makes sure you remove all of the outer punched part out.3) Put inner half on a vise and use a hammer and piece of flat steel (chisel with no cutting edge)4) Hammer the outer shaft off of the inner.5) While apart, pick a slightly larger drill bit and drill the outer holes again.6) Use a file to clean up metal burs on the inside of the outer shaft. (Don't over file)7) Lubricate and put back together.8) You may have to file a few times for best fit. (Again, don't over file the metal.)Hope this helps some folks out there. The product looks to be well built.I plan to install this week.
