I setup some rain barrels this year and this attachment has been wonderful! Instead of having the downspout directly into the barrel, this is a perfect adapter to deal with overflow. I can set a specific amount of rain to go into my barrel and the rest into the yard. It's going to take a bit of trial/effort to figure out exactly what setting you want for optimal results, but you'll get there! The piece itself is good quality and I have no complaints. I'm confident it'll last a long time. Highly recommended.

I ordered this to use at an off grid property shed to obtain a source of non potable water. Like most folks doing DIY projects, I used vinyl eavestrough from a major home improvement store. All went well until I went to install the diverter. The adapter hole at the top was bigger than the 2.5x2.5" downspout - no big deal. The problem was that the bottom of the diverter would not accept the vinyl downspout. Major issue. I had an old aluminum rectangular downspout piece, and it fit. Looks bad, but it's not on my house. The flexible hose is zip tied to fit in the packaging. You need to massage it to make sure that the hose actually stays round and open. It wants to collapse on the folds pinching it closed. My concern is that the water wouldn't have enough force to open the hose, causing the water to back up in the downspout and cause the eavestrough to overflow. It took quite a bit if effort to make sure that none of the hose was pinched where it had been folded.Great idea, could use a couple of engineering tweaks.

This device is a really good idea, allowing an existing downspout system to be used for collecting rainwater in a barrel or other container of almost any size. I had to wait for help from one of my sons-in-law, and he was having a particularly busy time. In the end, he persuaded me that because of the gradient of the ground close to the house, and the risks of making the foundation more vulnerable to flooding by removing any surrounding soil, it was not a good idea for me to place my rain barrel where I had planned. He pointed out how my rainwater drainage issues could be better solved by adding a downspout extension that would direct the water away from the house foundation. Even so, both he and I are favourably impressed with this Gutter Downspout Diverter. It seems to be well planned, well designed, and solidly constructed, and I plan to keep it on hand for potential future use. The fact that I am not currently able to make use of this Diverter is not in any way due to problems with the product itself, ir is due entirely to my failure to account for the risks of removing a large volume of soil so close to the house foundation. I am hoping to be able to build a raised platform for a rain barrel, because I still want to collect rainwater for watering outdoor plants. If / when I can do that, I will want to use the diverter, because it is in my opinion a good idea and a good product.

I have several downspouts that go directly into the ground and then into the sewer system. One of the downspouts in particular will back up when there is too much rain and will start to pool on my patio. This happens a few times a year. The problem is the downspout is surrounded by a sidewalk so putting on something that just drains to the ground is not an option.I saw this downspout diverter and I thought it would be a great way to divert some of the rainwater into a rain barrel. The diverter arrived very well-packaged. It comes with all the pieces necessary to attach to a 3x4 inch or 2x3 inch downspout. There is a hose included to direct the water from the diverted spout to a rain barrel. Instructions are also included. This comes set up to divert the water from the right side of the diverter. This is how I want to use it but it does claim you can switch it to the other side. There are supposed to be rubber pieces on the back that can be removed so you can do this but there are hard plastic areas on the back that look like they could be popped out but then you have no rubber plugs to put in the holes once the diverter has switched sides. I am not sure if the product was changed or if I got a dud but you definitely can not switch sides on the one I got. I have attached a photo showing this.To install this you cut out a small section of your downspout and put the pieces in place. The hardest part is cutting out the piece. Fortunately, my downspout could be removed very easily.Once installed there are 3 different positions you turn the knob to which control how the water is diverted. The first position just sends all the water down the downspout. The middle position sends the water 50/50 down the downspout and into the rain barrel. The last position sends most of the water to the rain barrel. Some will still go down but not a lot. I have attached 3 images of the inside of the diverter at all 3 positions. We had some heavy rain today and I tested this out and it does indeed work how it is intended to work.I was able to divert the rain to the barrel and prevent ponding on my patio. The only issue I have now is how to empty the rain barrel. I will start using the rainwater to water my plants.I am happy with this diverter. It's a nice DIY option to divert rain from the downspout to a rain barrel or even onto the ground. Our city is encouraging people to NOT send the water from downspouts into the sewer system because of a lot of flooding we have had here so I may put one of these on more of my downspouts to keep the city happy. This is a very inexpensive solution that does work and I do recommend it.

I had tot paint this one. Needed a white one but was not available. Yet, it works great and really easy to install. Collecting rain water now in case the power goes out :)
