I have managed a lot of storage from emc, netapps, ibm,hp. For a small to medium project I recommend QNAP storage and use this model tvs672xt as a backup of development system we use QNAP enterprise class ts series to backup quarterly or there is an anticipated update and this is powered off after the backup was taken. The storage might have been only powered up around 20 times for 8 hours and shutdown. This month after 3 years of lightly using it I have 2tb of data on 48tb (6x10tb disks). It won’t power up and got the red light on main board. I’m on the refresh cycle of storage and won’t be recommending any QNAP product for dev servers ( we consume petabytes of storage) due to this incident. This model should had been recalled since day 1 due to issue on main board.

This unit failed at about the 3 year mark under very low load. There is a well documented and common failure where the motherboard just gives up.Search "red light on motherboard no power qnap tvs" and see the number times this unit simply stops working with no recourse.Support has quoted me USD $1040 for the replacement of what they know is a factory defect in their product. No motherboard should fail by itself in 3 years. It certainly shouldn't be so common that you can find pages and pages of the same people with the same issue.Consider this before purchase.

I added four 6TB WD drives https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0792GSD6N/Upgraded the memory two 32GB chips https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07YBW84K9/and added two 1TB NVMe's https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09JHL33X7This system is great. It flies, the transfer speeds are great. I'm using it mainly to stream/transcode my plex library. Secondary for shared file storage in the house. The instructions that come with it are poor, but there's plenty of youtube videos you can watch.Upgrading the hardware was simple if you've done any pc upgrades in the past. Cover comes off, pull the drive cases out and you can reach the NVM slots and the memory slots.

Couldn't recommend this any less...Rarely used the unit - generally for mass storage of video/photo files.I powered it off about a month ago, went to turn it back on, and the entire unit simply died. Experts could power it on, but it delivered a dozen error messages and was completely unusable. The QNAP system set is also a bit confusing, but I have colleagues who were able to figure it out...eventually.

Qnap has problems with this unit, I have had my motherboard replaced about once a year under warranty. This unit will randomly reboot and then fail to power up leaving out without a NAS for two weeks while you have to ship the unit back at your own expense. Good luck when accessing QNAP encrypted drives, because QNAP has NO utility that will help you access data on encrypted drives. Buy two units so when you send it for repair every year you have a backup. They haven’t improved or fixed the motherboard issue. They just keep putting bad motherboard in until you run out of the standard two year warranty. The thunderbolt is also a hit and miss, works well sometimes otherwise doesn’t connect or craps out during large transfers!

This NAS is simple yet complicated at the same time. Setup will no doubt take longer than expected-especially if you are upgrading and adding hardware. If you plan to use 2 M.2 modules then be prepared to upgrade the RAM. I did a ton of research on this unit before buying and never saw this requirement. The information is on the QNAP website. I believe the requirement is at least 16gb of RAM. I added 32GB.I have an older Mac and the Thunderbolt connection is not reliable. Yes, I bought the expensive Qnap “certified” cable and the connection was so unreliable I stopped using it and now use the 10G connection with a thunderbolt to 10G third party adapter and its rock solid. Connection speed is only slightly slower. Hoping this changes with a new computer.I use this system in RAID 0 configuration for speed and mirror to my Dropbox business account. This works very well using the included sync software. 2 Disks are Seagate 12tb Ironwolf. I may add storage but a little over 20tb of storage more than meets my needs as I archive projects to Dropbox.Noise level is acceptable to me. The unit is about the size of a 4 slice toaster and can be transported. I bought a pelican foam case that fits the unit perfectly. This would work for local transport but no way would I baggage check it on a plane.Do your research and buy this thing. It’s excellent as long as you know it’s limitations.
