ITEM REVIEWED : Via Velo Bike Chain Lock, 7mm Square 4-Sided Chain, Length 2.96ft____________________________________________________________________________________________I've come to realize that no bike lock is perfect. Given enough time and the right tools the thieves can get through anything. So the plan is to make it harder and take longer for them. When you hold this bike chain lock in your hand you really get confident that this will slow them down. The keying mechanism is very robust/hefty and uses a key type making it more difficult to "pick". Route this chain lock through one of your wheels and around your frame and around a pole or fence and this will make it challenging for someone to steal your bike. I believe that the extra time required to get through this lock set will deter most bike thieves.**PRICE** This is always a big topic in any review. Although I feel that this higher price (CAD$58.86 when writing this review) is likely warranted giving it's robust/heavy duty build and unique keying mechanism (plus 4 keys!), the price does feel a bit high. This is a hefty lock. Basically, it's a chain style lock with nylon braiding over the chain. I would say that it's good for short-term security (e.g. going into a store) but not for a situation where you are leaving your bike for the day. Via Velo gives the lock a security rating of 7 which falls within their Extra Security of Level 5-8. The other levels are 1-4 for Standard Security and Level 9-10 for Maximum Security. The lock also falls into their Bronze security category which is the lowest for what seems to be their line of product with the other categories being gold and silver. There is also a diamond category.You get a generic instruction manual and I consider it generic because it is not specific to this lock.One of the features that the company promotes is the Key Guard Program. You are supposed to be able to retrieve and look up your code if necessary. This is the key code that is provided to you on a tag with your keys. However, the Via Velo website is horrible, alternating between Via Velo and Shopify with very little useful information and no clear indication that your lock is registered with them. While this program will provide you with free replacement keys, you will be faced with high shipping costs. The bottom line is that you have four keys. Don't lose them. I do like that they supply four keys as it's always good to have extras in case of loss.I would say that the lock is good for short-term security of your bike. I think that the website and key registration process needs to be revamped for it to be effective as it is not user-friendly.Overall, based on the lock itself, the Key Guard program and the price, I would rate this lock as average.

It's heavy, the chain feels tough, it's probably solid enough.(The plastic casing on the lock mechanism detracts a bit from that feeling of toughness for me though, but that probably doesn't matter.)There's some kind of spring mechanism that closes the key entry way so dirt doesn't get into it.The 2.96ft length, that's counting the body of the lock, and the very last chain link that's held inside the lock body.The usable loop length is actually more limited.When closed, I measure the inside diameter of the loop to be at most about 34cm.That's plenty to lock a bicycle's rear wheel, but not a lot more.If that's all you want then you'll appreciate not carrying extra bulk / not fussing with extra length.If you're hoping for extra length to tie to unusual objects, reaching to other parts of the bicycle, locking two bicycles,using on bigger equipment... you're probably out of luck with this one.The sleeve is nylon braiding, same stuff as is used to sleeve multiple cables together.I like that stuff on my USB cables or on my 3D printer, but for something exposed to outdoors dust and dirt I'm not so sure: won't sand get through it? Won't it become abrasive?Other bike chains I've had before had a smooth surface, not a grating one like this.The rubber ends of the sleeve look very well done though, thick and durable.I can't speak much to the security of the lock and chain.The 4 keys are generous, and the thing seems quite adequate for the job.Some internet references seem to think that 7mm is the bare minimum for a chain lock (this manufacturer offers a 6mm for $20 here on Amazon, so there's a big price gap)."Sold Secure Bronze" is only the lowest of their tiers, apparently considered secure only for short stops in low risk contexts.On one hand there are certainly cheaper offerings, but on the other, if your bike is expensive and you're serious about protecting it, there are more secure options too (more expensive and heavier).Is this one the right trade-off?For me, I'd want a longer chain and a different sleeve material.
