I use this to mix with charcoal and a good indoor potting soil to use for my monstera and other philodendrons. So far no troubles with root rot and the plants are all growing really well the past two years since I started to use more of this mix when repotting.

Love this mix to make my chunky mix to use for most of my plants. The pieces are not to big or small. When added to a chunky pumice, I can use it for my orchids.

I bought this orchid soil back in march and at that time I repotted about 10 different plants, 2 orchids with this mix and 8 bonsai seedlings with a different mix. I noticed I got gnats within a few weeks of repotting. I automatically assumed it was the bonsai soil beings that I had bought that and it was kept in a porch like area. All of the soil immediately went into plastic air tight containers after using. I recently had to repot one of my orchids again and a few of my other plants. Once again, I got gnats. Only this time they were accompanied by Japanese beetles and some of their larvae! Still thinking it was the other soil I got rid of it and decided I would purchase new soil for my bonsai. Beings I hate bugs, and was super skeeved out, I had already been using Neem oil to get rid of the bugs but it wasn’t enough for me. I decided I needed to change the soil as well. Well to my surprise, as soon as I open the plastic container I saw so many gnat eggs (now that i unfortunately can recognize them and know what to look for). I am now convinced that the Japanese garden beetles came from this soil too. Super frustrated and had to spend all sorts of money to get rid of bugs in my house. The soil itself wasn’t bad and I would have given it 5 stars had I not gotten the unwanted critters with the soil.

Despite other reviews going on about eggs/bugs/etc (any soil could have these in them miracle grow or not, so spending more doesn't guarantee no bugs or anything at all) I decided to give this a try since the value was too much to pass up. You get a full 8 qts for under 10$, any other orchid bark I've seen has been 20$+ and is usually 2 or 4 qts. I use orchid bark in my soil mix for my aroids and hoyas as they like a chunky soil aerated soil with good drainage. This is now a staple of mine, I can't speak on growing orchids in this, but it works wonderfully as a soil additive. I typically do a mix of ~30 to 40% Orchid Park ~ 30% African Violet/Succulent potting mix and fill the rest with perlite. It works amazingly well, and this orchid bark is perfect. 1 bag goes so far, it has nice chunky chips and overall I'm honestly impressed with miracle grow. I only deducted 1 star because there were some long wood shards randomly mixed in - no big deal I just picked them out - but they are hard to use for potting. Overall I will still be purchasing it!

The product seems fine but I found out I'd paid double what it was worth. Much cheaper in stores.

I've bought this before so was surprised to get a bag of SUPER large CHUNKY CHUNKY bark chunks. This bag is NOT a 'coarse mix' unless 'Coarse-mix' means HUGE CHUNKS mixed with other HUGE CHUNKS.It might be a 'one-off' so will cut Miracle Grow some slack on this BUT... Time to move on to a different growing situation after this (see below about modified hydro)I can chop these chunks up & cut them down and will use them BUT... that kinda defeats the purpose of buying a 'ready to use' product.I've been thinking of converting most of my orchids to a modified hydroponic system anyway - after observing for over a year now some THRIVE in clear glass with a water spray once a week (under the plants I've got lava rock and glass blobs to hold water for evap. I live way north in Alaska where the winter air is dry and having that extra water provides the Orchids with a very nice habitat) SO, after wasting $ on this stuff... Now's the time to begin the conversion. My orchids are clear of bugs and fungi so the waste water with light fertilizer will end up in the non-organic part of the garden like it has for years)Orchid roots photosynthesize too SO from my experiments and observations - my orchid vars (Cattelya, Oncidium crosses, Paphs, Phals etc., )actually like living in clear glass and flower better too .SO >>> Let the bark chips fall where they may - LIKE in the forest so they return to nature... and better yet... don't chop the trees down in the first place.
