My line counter reels fit securely into the R-5 . However spinning reels placed in front of the R-5 as pictured could be easily pulled into the lake. If you place the spinning reel into the center cradle it won't get pulled in but the reel is not snug, it will flop around.

Bought for trolling for walleye. Walleye rods don't seat into holder properly. Might with some rods but not any of mine. Used 3 tomes and had a rod either hook up or snag something and it went overboard. Needless to say, I'm going back to the tried and true Orca clam she'll holders.

I bought this as well as a Scotty #260, and this is superior by all accounts. I didn't real how often I pick up the rod to and after using this and switching back to a standard rod holder like the #260, I immediately wanted to switch back to the #289.

I have Scotty Orcas that I have been using on my kayak. They hold the rods well but they are a little awkward in getting the rods into and out of some of the time so I thought I would give these a try. First, thing I noticed is that these are way lighter than the orcas - which is great for the kayak. I would say that I am still getting the feel for putting the rods in easily but getting them out is always a breeze and feels faster than with the orcas. Getting the rods out quickly with a fish on is the most important aspect to me.Overall, I recommend these. If I had a good sized boat with orcas I doubt I would see a need to replace the orcas. If I was putting in rod holders for the first time I would likely pick these over orcas.. I like the smaller, lighter design and easier release.Just my $.02

Try so many different rod holders. This is one of the best that I have test. It secured the rod in the holder with flopping around. Easy to pull out of the rod holder when the fish on.
