The SS option extension is a little heavier than the plastic extended version. Planning to add two rods onto here plus a fish finder but overall pleased with the purpose. Its SS so it will be salt water resistant and perfect for inshore/harbor fishing in Southern California to the great lakes of the Eastern Sierras and Lake Pend Orielle, ID. Best long term investment

These are heavy built. I didn't like how the mount key is positioned so I took the screw out, twisted the top half 180 degrees and reassembled.The issue: Scotty rod holders are smartly designed so the key requires you to point the holder inboard to take it out of the base. So any position you would actually use it (pointing outboard) will keep the rod holder locked in the original base properly. These extensions (unmodified) would reverse that situation so the rod holder mounted atop the extension would unlock when pointed *outboard*. This is not what you want, obviously. So take the extension apart, twist the top half 180 degrees and reassemble. As modded, you can now mount the extension into the original base, twist it 180 degrees to lock the extension into the base, and then mount the rod holder on the extension by pointing the rod holder inboard to line up the key, then turn the rod holder to point anywhere outboard to secure the rod holder like you could before using this extension.

Purchased these extensions for a friend who has an older bass boat. There was no place really to mount the rod holders so the bases were screwed right to the floor. The extensions were great for 2 reasons: 1. Standing up fishing you didn't need to bend down as far and struggle with getting the rod out and 2. We installed them for drifting sucker rigs for Muskie and with the longer rod handles, having the rod holder right in the base made it miserable for lifting the rod up and out while trying to either set the hook or cautiously lift the rod and not spook the fish.

I ordered these rod holder extension thinking they would be just strong enough to hold the pole with the drag set correctly on the reel. I fish for blue cats and figured that a 15-20 pounder would probably break these things into two pieces. I received my extenders and was extremely surprised at the strenght of them. They are very well built and made in canada. I am ready to hook into a big one with no concerns of breakage. I would recommend this product for purchase to anyone.
