1.Tune your guitar. This ensures the right tension is applied to the neck.
2.Make sure your neck is straight and adjust your truss rod needed.
3.Rest the ruler or string action gauge tool on the 12th fret.
4.Read the ruler from the bottom of the string.
5.Repeat this for any other string on your guitar you need to measure.

With the help of a few guitar setup videos, this gauge was easy to use to setup up a guitar. The dark background and clear white lines & lettering were easy to read. Is also purchased one of the less expensive radius gauge sets and a feeler gauge set I already owned to get the guitar playing great.

It comes in a nice leather (or leather-like) pouch and it is accurate for all its intended uses. So much better than a cheap plastic card gauge.

This is a quality tool as far as I can tell, but I’m no expert on guitar tools. As such, my opinion on the quality should be taken with a grain of salt, but below I will list what I noticed about this tool.Pros:-Accurate measurements. I measured this with my caliper, and every measurement I checked (string action height blocks, and all the final millimeter marks) was spot on.-All the marks are etched into the metal, so they shouldn’t be able to wear off-No sharp edges-Metal is thin, but sturdy enough that I shouldn’t be able to accidentally bend it.-This comes with 3 guitar picks, which are a good additionCons:-Lettering is kind of small, and could be hard to read for some. I guess this is to be expected though, since it’s not much bigger than a credit card.

This is perfect for quick checking of string height for a "regular" guitar owner. I am sure if you are a professional luthier or set up a guitar a week, you could get different tools, but for this worked perfectly for my needs.
