Over the last 25 years I have purchased many different crowning files. Bang for the buck, this one can’t be beat. If you are an experienced luthier just starting out, this is the best deal you will be able to find.

Surprisingly good quality. After leveling with a beam, this is an awesome tool for just putting a perfect crown on them quickly!Tips:The round cylindrical shaft can be hard to "index" - where you know you've got the slot straight down onto the top of the fret - I just put a line with a marker on the side facing up as a visual indicator that I've got it straight. This also helps not having to continually check to be sure you're using the right size, which can be tricky.Use a fine wire brush occasionally to get the metal dust cleared out.

This product is OK. I would not recommend for professional use, but OK for occasional use. I bought it because I was trying to be cheap and not have to pay for the Stew Mac. I also have a Fret Guru, which is really good, but I wanted something for more narrow frets.

I purchased this file to finish off my fret work when crowning and levelling the frets on my acoustic guitars. The other file I had purchased was supposed to file the sides and leave some work on top of the fret for this file. Unfortunately the other file was not usable due to it's poor design. So since I only had this file to work with I decided to try a few frets high on the neck to see if it would work. Happily it worked great, the file is very sharp and quickly took the sides down with very little pressure allowing me to leave a very thin fret center. I crowned two acoustic guitars using this file and it is still cutting great so I expect years of use remaining, highly recommend, it's all you really need in a fret crowning file.

IT DOES NOT FIX FRET END / FRET SPROUT IT'S ONLY FOR TOP OF THE FRET IN ORDER TO LOWER THE FRETS DOWN. Good and simple but not what I need...

I had messed up frets after 15 years of abuse by punk bands in a recording studio. I'm sharing pictures of the results after leveling, recrowning, sanding, polishing to 3000 grit, and conditioning the fretboard. The grit of this file in practice is about 150 to 180. It doesn't mess around. I had to sand to 220, 400, and 1000 with feet erasers after recrowning. I also scratched my fretboard because I didn't use painter's tape for protection initially and had to sand out the damage. Very happy with this tool.

The first thing that I noticed is that it has some good weight to it. Very happy that this is not some hollow piece that is made from some cheap pot metal, this is really nice quality. For the guys and gals just getting into doing some fret work you will 100% need to also get a fret rocker, a leveling beam, some green masking tape and either fret erasers or nail buffing blocks ( I use the blocks because they are cheap AF and work soooooo well ) I would also recommend watching a good amount of youtube tutorials to make sure you are comfortable doing this on your own.

I chose this tool because it seemed to be the best economical fret crowning file on Amazon. So far, I have used it to crown 2 fretboards and I don’t think it is wearing out at all (I saw a review that said the “diamond” teeth break away?).I haven’t used other fret crowning files so I have nothing to judge this against aside from what I’ve seen on YouTube, but I imagine the more costly files are a bit easier to use all around. This file cuts better with a little force, at the right angles, it takes some getting used to, and I noticed a bit difference from the front/middle/back of the file length. I tried my best to keep my filing to the middle section of the tool, which required me to file from both sides of the fretboard. Also, to get a good crown for the medium jumbo frets on my LP junior, I had to hold the file a bit sideways and attack the fret one side at a time, instead of just going over the entire fret like I imagine a proper fret crowning file should. On both necks I used this on so far, I took my sharpie line down to what my eye thought was a very thin hair of a line, but after polishing with 600/800 grit sandpaper and fret erasers, I noticed the crown of all the frets are at least twice as wide as what they appeared to be with my sharpie line. For the money, this tool works well if you have patience figuring out what it can and cant do. Side note, the ferrel fell off when I unboxed it. No biggie, it’s just decorative anyway.I’d definitely recommend this if you are keeping a super tight budget. There are so many luthier tools out there.
