  • Designed by our Sonoma, CA team, the innovative U-File lowers single high guitar frets, effectively eliminating string/fret buzz. Our unique U-shaped channel design slides under the string for optimal file placement and uses a wide diamond coated file to quickly and efficiently lower and level the fret height to match adjacent frets.
  • With strings on or off, lay across 3 frets with the high fret in the middle and file either up or down or side to side. Designed to work for all Electric Guitars, Acoustic Guitars, Banjo, Mandolin and Ukulele. Works for all Bass frets except the first 5 frets closest to the nut.
  • Our low profile handle lets you get close to the fretboard and file with comfort and control in any direction, depending on the situation. The notches on top and arrows on the side provide the location of the diamond coated filing area.
  • Each set includes 3 sizes: 1.25" (3.2cm) , 2" (5.1cm) and 3" (7.6cm) and a convenient storage sleeve with a hang hole. Each U-file also includes a hang hole.
  • Precision made with .059" (1.50mm) thick stainless steel and hand lapped flat (+/-.00125"/ft) to meet tight specifications and avoid any deformation. Use with confidence, all edges deburred and/or rounded for a soft feel.

Don't level all your frets when you have 1 or 2 high frets causing fret buzz. MusicNomad's U-File creates a higher standard for what you should expect for single fret leveling. Our U-shaped channel design gives you clear and easy access to file exactly where you need, right below the string! The premium diamond coated 3 pc. set allows you to do spot leveling on Acoustic Guitar, Electric Guitar, Banjo, Mandolin and Ukulele without taking the strings off. With the strings on or off lay the U-File across 3 frets with the high fret in the middle and file in any direction. The low profile ergonomic handles give you total comfort and control for precision work. It even comes with a convenient storage sleeve that hangs up. That's MusicNomad quality, bringing fret care to the next level.

Make sure that your neck is straight first, then get this thing to work. With this set + good crowing tool + good polish tools = great smooth frets while saving you at least 200 bucks a pop. AND leaving you with a set of tools that will last a lifetime.

Well thought out product. I have an acoustic guitar that had some uneven frets in the cowboy chord area. After closely watching MN’s how-to videos on the topic, I set about spot leveling the frets with these files. It was my first time doing any kind of fret work but in the end it worked out really well. My advice, carefully watch the how-to videos and then take your time. Make sure your guitar is properly setup before using these files, so you’re sure you have a fret problem and not a setup problem. I used MN’s S-file afterwards to recrown the frets and that worked well too. I’m only giving the U-files 4 stars because I don’t know how long the abrasive coating will last. I have no reason to think it won’t last but only time will tell, and I don’t have any other guitars needing fret work at this time.

I have a guitar which I set up to a nice low action, but fret buzzing from frets 2 and 3. I used this to bring those two frets down to level then I used a crowning file to round off the top of the fret. There's no movement checking them with a fret rocker, all the buzz is gone, and the guitar plays beautifully now. I am super happy with the results, this files are awesome! If you're not familiar with doing fret work be sure to watch the instruction video on how to use these. You will also need a crowning file. And if you have many frets that are not level, this is probably not the best solution, but for only a few frets they are fantastic.I can't say yet how well they will hold up to being used on many frets, but so far I see no clogging.

I was a little apprehensive about buying the Music Nomad U-files. However, I read many positive comments about them on various forums on the Internet, and I watched a number of YouTube videos. I can assure you, based on my own user experience, that this is indeed a very good solution for any DIY Guitarist who needs to take care of occasional high frets. Nowadays, it seems that ALL brand new budget and mid-tier guitars require fret care. Taking your guitar to a professional guitar technician or luthier is going to cost you no small amount of money. You could easily pay $100 for a fret levelling on a brand new guitar - whaaat!?I have four or five guitars in my collection that are all good quality, mid-tier instruments. And although the quality of the instruments is very good, and although the necks and set ups were all correct, I was annoyed by high frets. The high frets were ruining otherwise excellent guitar playing experiences. Some of my guitars, such as MiM Fender Stratocasters, Telecaster, and similar, I would just take the necks off and ship them to a good friend of mine, who is a professional guitar tech/luthier, to get them levelled, re-crowned and polished (I don’t have a shop or person who does guitar work anywhere nearby). As you can imagine, that can get expensive really fast, especially when you figure in shipping rates, the cost of having someone else work on my guitars, plus the frustration of long wait times. For many obvious reasons I became highly motivated to start learning about fret care for myself.I have always been very capable and competent to set neck relief, action, and intonation for myself, but doing fret levelling or spot levelling was definitely something that I was not comfortable with. After all, it requires no small amount of skill. Praise the Lord! The Music Nomad U-file makes it idiot proof to spot level high frets for yourself - without taking off too much material from the top of the frets. The three different file lengths guarantees that you will have the correct tool, no matter where on the neck you need to take care of a high fret.I have successfully levelled high frets on all of my guitars that needed spot levelling. Once you get used to the feel of the tool and how to use it, the task becomes very intuitive and easy to do - with excellent results every time. I also bought the music nomad S-file. It too is a very comfortable tool to work with, and it does a great job of crowning frets after spot levelling. After re-crowning frets, I polish them to perfection using the Music Nomad Fret Tracers. LOL . . . I guess you could say that I am turning into a bit of a Music Nomad fanboy… But that’s OK because the Music Nomad tools are good quality, and they work very well. I also have a few Stewmac tools, but Stewmac’s prices are very high, and their shipping rates to Canada are exorbitant! To be honest with you, I’m finding that Music Nomad’s tools are very much the same kind of quality as the Stewmac variety, but a bit more affordable.

Pros:Great fit and finishEased edges, nothing sharp that shouldn't beVisual guidesGood sizes, Length and widthAggressive diamond grit (pro & con)Hang hole(s)Cons:Cost (less than the competition, still expensive)Agressive diamond grit (pro & con)This kit has been used on 3 guitars at this point, and it makes very quick work of bringing down any high frets. Seems to handle stainless fret wire well (1 of the 3 necks).I'll be using these little fellas quite often! While I have not had an issue with the diamond grit plugging up (yet). Keep an eye on the diamond surface, gently clean it after each neck. Many people complain of diamond fret files failing, when it is actually just the diamond surface getting plugged up. So that is often user error, not always the tools.

I believe these files are better than the stewmac fret kisser. Better price and are 3 separate pieces compared to the fret kisser that is all in one.

I have been playing guitar for over 50 years and along the way my luthier skills have also developed to the point that I have been doing my own fret work from replacing to leveling and polishing and so much more. For some reason I just discover this U-level kit and I am delighted by the results I am achieving! This is a real game changer. The width of each U-shaped 'file' is such that you can place it under the string to do your filing and the broad width allows you to do the job quickly. Also each U-shaped file (all 3) are machined from what I can tell so they are perfectly straight and can act as a fret-rocker of sorts to help you locate the high fret in a pinch. Even the the highest frets at the top of a 24 fret guitar. The fact that you can do this with the strings in place means that you confirm that your fret has indeed been level and then onto the next fret. You will of course have to remove your strings to polish the frets but at least you can knock out big stuff and get the instant gratification of knowing your now in good shape with regard to the level of your frets before moving on to a polish and new set of strings. Here is a tip, and I swear by this when doing any fret work: Buy the wide black Sharpie pen. The tip is probably 3/16 wide. You locate your high fret and then run the Sharpie over the entire length of that fret. Just stretch the strings out of the way as you move the marker along. Now the top of the fret is completely black. Then go to the fret that proceeds the black/high fret and move each string up and down like you would if you were bending it while playing. Then look at the high fret again and see how much of the black has been removed by the bending action. This can help to identify how high that fret is and how much of it is actually high (duh) but it also helps you identify how much fret material you are removing when you start to file and especially when you crown the fret after initially filing it down. Making the fret black and then doing any kind of work on it will always tell the story.Yes, it may seem pricey for 3 little U-shaped files but these really are a specialty item and in my opinion are worth every cent. I also feel strong that they beat the competition in every way. I have straightened out 4 of my guitars in the first afternoon (2 vintage Strats and 2 PRS Core) and it is a no brainer to get your high fret resolved in seconds. I highly recommend this beautifully crafted little kit.
