This review evaluates the “Portable Cordless Soldering Iron Kit for Makita18V Battery” made by MAKBOS.The product was shipped with no excessive or wasteful packaging and all components were contained snugly in the box. What’s in the box: one (1) 18V Makita battery soldering head unit adaptor, one (1) soldering rod whip, one (1) roll of soldering wire, one (1) soldering, five (5) spare soldering rod tips, one (1) de-soldering tool and a user instruction sheet.First impressions: Well-made. Solid. Handy. The adapter casing is made of high-quality rugged ABS plastic. The adapter has a large backlit LED display in the front along with an ON/OFF switch and +/- buttons to increase/decrease the desired soldering temperature from 321C to 480C. The produced power output by the inverter is 60W.How does it perform? The adapter slides and attaches to an OEM 18V Makita battery easily and securely without binding or looseness. After mounting a 3.0aH battery and turning it on, I found that the unit reached its maximum soldering temperature of 480C in under 30 seconds. To test the soldering capabilities of this unit I grabbed a piece of 18AWG lamp cord a prepped to tin the ends of each conductor. I found that it did the job adequately but was a bit on the slower side. I then tried the same experiment with 22AWG automotive wire and found it did the job efficiently and quickly. I would say that 18AWG would be the maximum wire gauge that I’d want to solder to ensure a solid joint; thinner gauges or circuit boards are ideal for this unit. After four soldered wires and about 5-8 minutes of being on, it did not make any discernable drain on my battery. This adapter is perfect for small jobs in the field fixing your car, etc. However, I did not notice any built-in fuse protection against, overheating, short-circuiting, or overloads which is somewhat concerning. There's no CSA/UL safety certification for North American use and user beware there is legislation in some jurisdictions that disallow such uncertified products from being sold and used. While I understand that it is common practice in overseas products in this price range for manufacturers to cut costs, certifications are there for user safety to prevent electrocutions or fires from malfunctioning products. One thing that would be a nice addition would be if the adapter Included non-slip textured grips on the sides. I also would appreciate it if this kit included a nice semi-rigid EVA zippered case to keep this entire kit together.I am evaluating this product as part of the Amazon Vine program so I am limited to a 30-day window to submit a review. Only time will tell if this product has similar longevity and effective service life as other competitive products on the market. Therefore, I am going to monitor this product over the next 8-12 months of use and revise my review should problems arise.Cost-effectiveness and value: Overall I am very impressed with the product. At a current price of $39.99, I feel it is very competitively priced when compared to other similar products in this class and the quality/functionality delivered. In summary: the “Portable Cordless Soldering Iron Kit for Makita18V Battery” made by MAKBOS is made of high-quality materials, is compact, and does a great job. I would recommend this product without reservation.Pros 👍:✔ Rugged, well-made using quality materials.✔ Fit, finish, and build quality on par with an OEM tool.✔ 60W power.✔ Built-in LED backlit display.✔ Positive ON/OFF increase/decrease button switches.✔ Suitable for home or light-duty trade use.✔ Good battery life.✔ Competitively priced in its class and good value.Cons👎:✘ There is no built-in fuse protection against, overheating, short-circuiting, or overloads.✘ Not CSA/UL certified for use in Canada and the USA.Manufacturer Suggestions 🖐:✔ Include non-slip textured grips on the sides.✔ Include a nice semi-rigid EVA zippered case to keep this entire kit together.
