Book are embalmed minds. That's why I now see Dan as a walking encyclopedia when it comes to guitar repair. There’s a wealth of experience in these pages that only comes from years of dedication to the craft. The “Guitar Player Repair Guide” has three sections: Basic, DIY and Deep. Again, Dan is so knowledgeable that the “Basic” sections are pretty much everything the average player needs to know. You’ll need to roll-up your sleeves for the DIY sections and have considerable dedication for the Deep sections.Dan has his own way of doing things and gives great detail on how-to and often why he likes a particular way. But what I really like is he points out how other people do things too. There are interviews and so many names/publications mentioned that the book is also a great resource for further study.Basically, Dan is confidant because he has mastered the craft of guitar repair. He doesn’t feel threatened by different perspectives. That’s what makes the “Guitar Player Repair Guide” the best book I’ve seen on guitar repair: It is intentionally inclusive of different approaches. If you do guitar repair for a living, then the “Guitar Player Repair Guide” is a must have. If you’re looking to just care for your guitar and want something more basic, then I suggest “Complete Guitar Care” by Blackwood. Wouldn’t hurt to get both. So glad I did.

Covers just about everything the youtubers forget to mention. Things like the affect of gravity on neck relief, shaping compound necks and compensating for high fret falloff. Really good book if you prefer to learn from a pro instead of some hack looking for views. Stop sifting videos looking for gems...read how it's done and *then* find a video of someone doing it. Much faster learning curve. And start buying pawn shop guitars to practice on.

Dan Erlewine is the kind of guy that designs flying V’s that people that would normally never buy one want. My personal experience is that not all guitar store owners are created equal and some of them seek to limit your chances of success. They sell you solid state amps that appear to be broken down even though you asked for a tube amp and set up your guitar with string action higher than the Mount Everest. It just isn’t going to work…And we don’t all have access to technicians that support our endeavors. You need to figure things out for yourself. This book helps you do that. It will help you check and maintain your guitar. If it’s a high end guitar it will help you keep it in shape. If it’s a budget guitar with expansion opportunities, this book will help you do it. If you need a reference to show you how to make sure your neck is straight, this book is that reference guide. If you want to know how to wind your own pickups – it’s only a small gargantuan step from fixing and maintaining your guitar to building one from the ground up, right? – this book will help you do that. It’s a good reference guide with all the info you need. I’ve found that in the contents a few page numbers are off, which may be due to this being a later edition, and a few pictures have shifted from the right to the left, but hey, they have subtitles, the info is still there. No biggie and practical people won’t mind all that much, they’ll find it. It’s all there. It’s all clearly illustrated, verbally and with pictures. This is the book you want to have.

Been extremely helpful to have this on hand. Most of the info in it I have found online before, but it's nice to have it right on the shelf with a sticky note. You can do fine with just going through forums, and websites but this has all that information packaged up nicely. Very happy with it.

Dan Erlewine's name is probably familiar to most guitar players who have ever thought about or worked on their own guitars. Although he is now associated with a large after-market parts supplier, this book is an excellent resource for someone who wants to begin to set up and service their own electric guitars. There are other, similar books by good authors, but this one seems to be the most comprehensive I've found so far. If I had to buy just one to start doing my own service work, this would be it.

As stated in the headline, I think this book is pretty much indispensable if you enjoy having your instruments in perfect playing shape. It is easy to read, has tons of good info, pictures to see what he is doing and is organized from easy (low degree of skill required) to complex (high degree of skill required) repairs.A couple of examples: 1) Over the years I thought I had it all figured out when it came to string changes on my classical, acoustic or electric guitars. I kind of did but the tips and suggestions helped me to "perfect" this simple but important task. My instruments now stay in tune much better! 2) Using the instructions, a screwdriver and electronic tuner all my instruments now have excellent intonation. By doing basic setups on my guitars and bass I have saved money (paid for the book multiple times over) and, bonus, found out I really enjoy doing this kind of work.

A lot of information in this book, some I'll never use. However if your in any way interested in making basic guitar repairs, or complex ones its a good book to get you started,. I managed to fix a rather large dent in the maple neck of my beloved stratocaster. While not 'as good as new' it looks significantly better and most importantly it masked the damaged area so I no longer see it when playing...not sure a pro would have done any better. So for me it was worth the cost. Also if your interested in guitar set up this is a great reference.

This is a fantastic book with lots of illustrations and detailed descriptions. I would recommend the book for all players and the DIYers. I have made a few repairs and am onto some bigger repair projects. The book is a great resource for getting the job done right. Even if you do not fix up guitars for others, it is invaluable to have around incase you need to do repairs to yours. It also serves as a preventative manual in some ways. As you read through, you will pick up on info on how to keep your guitar in tip top shape and prevent future repairs.
