I purchased this unit thinking it would solve any soldering problems only to find out that the tips ( and yes I did tin them properly) will not hold heat. I have mine set at 370 C (698 F) and it will only melt 60/40 Solder for a second or two then it will not melt again until I wait for about 5 minutes then the same procedure over again.Guess I shouldn't believe all the hype.

I decided to finally replace my old trusty Radio Shack 20w/40w soldering station. It worked well, but I needed replacement tips, and after a few different orders of tips that were listed as fitting it, and finding they did not, I figured it was just time to replace it completely. This station is great! Heats super fast, and maintains a stable temperature. Not sure I’ll utilize the solder holder for the side, because I prefer to hold the roll in my hand, but it may be helpful for some. I only have three gripes….. 1) there’s no tip storage for the extra tips that come with it. They will be quickly lost on my workbench. 2) the tip sizes are all very large. It would be nice if they offered smaller tips for more intricate work (hopefully X-Tronic takes this into consideration). 3) the set temp does not retain in memory, when the station is turned off-on. It powers up to the maximum temp, and I have to turn it down, every time. Other than those three things, this thing is an amazing upgrade over my 20yo Radio Shack station.

If you need a solder iron, look no more. This has to be the best I've had. Nice tips, heats up in 9 seconds! Nice holder for the iron, but I don't think I'll use the ring holder that holds the solder. Usually you hold the solder in one hand the the iron in the other. As they say, more bang for your buck.
