Unless you solder 8 hours a day on unusual and varied parts that require even more power than this can supply to the soldering tip, you will not be disappointed. This is simply a fantastic product and an exceptional reproduction of the metcal products over their patents expired. Highly recommended for anyone that wants to buy one that’ll last the rest of their lives…

I got this unit about 1 1/2 years ago, so thought it was time to do a review. (What's the point of those "I just opened the box and it looks great!" reviews?) I originally was going to get a Metcal, as I have used those in my workplace for years. The Thermaltronics seemed equivalent, and even used the same tips, so I decided to pay less and give it a try. I have to say that it has proven itself to be a great performer, and I have had zero problems with it.The only sight difference I can tell from a Metcal is that it might take just a little longer to pop up to temperature after being in the stand, which puts it in a lower heat "standby" mode. we are talking about maybe 3 seconds, big deal. It may be well worth it in preventing the tips from burning up. I use mostly leaded solder on vintage equipment and am on my second tip in 18 months or so of pretty heavy usage. It works nicely, the power unit doesn't get hot, the tips are fast and easy to change, and the display is useful and easy to read. After you have used one of these for a while, you won't want to go back to one of those blue and yellow "beginner stations" again!Tip from an old pro: forget the wet sponge and use the copper curls to clean the tip. You will find they last much longer, especially with lead-free.

Was looking for a quick to heat lab soldering iron and couldnt decide between the metcal, hakko, or this one. Went with this one kind of being in the middle of value and performance and glad I did. Hakko might not have had such a quick heatup and would use different tips and the metcal would have been overkill for the price. This one does everything I need flawlessly so far. Looking to add the tweezers next.Source : EEE of 8 years with a homelab for embedded projects

I bought this soldering station to replace my dead Weller. I've had this station for a few months and I'm really happy with it. I also purchased a second iron and stand. The tip heat up to working temperature in a matter of seconds.

This is a really nice soldering station and it works well to maintain a consistent temperature set by the tip itself. No longer am I constantly fiddling with a temperature knob going to my tip temp tester to verify, etc. This thing gets hot and stays hot, even under load. I can heat up my 4 layer 2x2" board with one of the larger tips to the point where solder flows. My old soldering iron never managed to get there

I update my rating to 5 stars. I found out the reason it seems to be a little slower than Metcal BECAUSE the holder that comes with this turns the handpiece off when you put the handpiece onto the holder. The holder has two pieces of magnetic inside to force the iron to turn off to save the tip. I removed the magnetic and it's every bit as fast and as strong as my Metcal MX-500. Absolutely no difference. I asked Thermaltronics whether it's ok to do that, they said yes, just make sure to tin the tip. So it's no difference than the Metcal. I have been using it a lot and loving it. The tips are totally interchangeable with Metcal STTC series.UPDATE: It's been over two months, I am using it almost everyday and hours at a time. I am loving it more and more. It's my main iron, the Metcal is my secondary iron on the left side. I just feel it works better than the Metcal. feel it heat up faster. It is money well spent.
